Chapter Nine

Charlie, for the first time in months upon months, knocked on Janey’s door. Janey was the one who always went to her place, since it was more convenient for them both: Charlie didn’t need to leave the house, while Janey had to for work, which was close to where Charlie lived. She hadn’t passed by in some time now, though, and Charlie felt it like a pang in her chest. Her brother was so far away now, and she couldn’t bear her best friend being away too.

It took a moment, then Janey opened the door.

“Ah,” she said.

Charlie gave her a winning smile and lifted up the chocolate cake she’d brought.

Janey sighed and opened the door for her to walk in. Charlie contained her own relieved sigh and followed her in, hands firm where they held the cake, eager to soak up its warmth. She knew that Janey wouldn’t allow her a single piece of this apology cake.

Jane pointed at a stool by her kitchen island. “Sit.”

Charlie sat.

“Is that an apology cake?”

“Yes,” Charlie said. “You know I hate it when you’re mad at me! I got the dark chocolate one with— “

“Why are you apologizing to me?” Jane asked, cross. She sat down beside Charlie and tugged the cake to herself. Charlie watched it go, feeling morose.

“Because you’re mad?”

Jane sighed again. “Have you spoken to your brother?”

“Yes, and I used an app to send him a pizza, since he’s a friend who doesn’t like cake. He’s… He’s still upset. It’s harder, you know, for us to talk since we’re so far away. But I’ve talked to him, yes! A bit. I’m not so inept.”

“Thank God,” Janey said, and stabbed a fork directly into the cake, not bothering with a plate, because she was a savage. “Fine. You were right that I shouldn’t micromanage your relationship with Jacob, it’s not my place.”

“I didn’t mean— “

“Yes, you did,” Janey interrupted. “You’re his sister, and all I can do is give you advice. You’ll figure things out with him. Now, onto other matters—how’s book club? How’s your book? How’s your girl? You are treating Tuney right, right? “

“Of course, I’m treating her right!” Charlie said, indignant. “She’s amazing. Did you know she’s going to start writing too? I’ve got stars in my eyes. And the club is fun, though it’s sadder and sadder that they don’t know who I am. There must be a way I can sneak some autographs into those books of theirs…”

“If you value your privacy, you definitely won’t. I see the only thing you didn’t mention was your book.”

Charlie rolled her eyes. “You know how it is. I’m at that stage where I think everything I’ve written is awful and I should just start something else.”

“All right,” Janey said, licking her spoon. “I’m here if you need help.”

“All right.”

They sat in silence for a moment.

“So, what’s bothering you?” Janey asked dryly.

“Tuney wants me to meet her family,” Charlie told her in a whine, her head falling to her crossed arms.
